More and more people are deciding to move to the suburbs during the pandemic as commuting to work becomes irrelevant. The relocation of work to home offices, and even schooling, shopping, and healthcare visits via internet connection have become the new normal. With nearly seven in ten workers are doing their jobs from home, USPS data shows that 15.9 million people have moved during the coronavirus.

Why are people moving during COVID-19?

To understand COVID moving trends or why people are moving during COVID-19, a Pew Research Center study conducted in June looked at almost 10,000 U.S. adults.

  1. 28% say the most important reason was to reduce their risk of contracting the virus.
  2. 23% say it was because their college campus closed.
  3. 20% say they wanted to be with family.
  4. An additional 18% say the most important reason was financial – either job loss (8%) or another money-related reason (10%).

Where are people moving during COVID-19?

Densely populated cities are at a much higher risk of contracting the virus, and it’s only logical to say that people relocate to areas with fewer people, where the risk of spreading or contracting the virus could be lower. While people moving out of big cities isn’t a new trend, moving out has increased during the pandemic. Let’s see what the data says…

According to My Move, six of the ten cities that had the highest net gain of movers during COVID-19 were in Texas because it provides many attractive features, such as lower cost of living, a variety of smaller towns, and plenty of open space.
